Really loving this buckle. Was all of 10-12" down very near to where I pulled a 1600s nipple button a while back. Ill have to look for a match in my buckle book when I get home but pretty sure it dates no later than 1720. First early two piece buckle I have found with an intact chape(most of it) and made of the same material as the frame. Ive been doing really well with early buckles since last fall:headbang:

Great find - definitely mid-to-late 17th century. I've never dug one exactly like that with the flared extensions (other than the "butterfly" buckle). The closest thing I can find to it in the Whitehead book is shown below. Not an exact match, but definitely of the same style. Outstanding recovery!

This particular buckle has a drilled frame and separate spindle. Whitehead only has four examples of drilled frame asymmetrical buckles like mine and none are similar. Oddly it is the second drilled frame asymmetrical buckle I have found in less than a month. This one is much nicer though

I agree it's a 17th C type. I think they are Spur Buckles. I've had a couple of that flared out type, similar to book, but not a match to yours either.

I was thinking spur buckle too as the wearing of spurs was not only utilitarian but part of the fashion too up until around 1700. Could also be a shoe buckle but I doubt a knee buckle as they were not in fashion that early

Wow. I just spotted this in your avatar and had to go thru your posts to get to this thread. That is one of the most awesome buckles I have ever seen found here near home. :headbang:
