Might be a slug?
Don......

Pretty sure it's not a slug...dug a number of those and also done 15 years electrical work. The edge is thinner and round...There's definitely something underneath the crud. I'll find out for sure in a few weeks of olive oil, but waiting sux. The last time I had to wait that long was with a shield nickel.

I found a toasty Buffalo that looks a lot like yours. It could be a Buff, Maybe.

Looks like a thick flat button to me. I've had some of the thick ones ring up as a penny. I may also see a divot in the middle.

I've found many as thick as that one. Most date around the last part of the flat button era. 1830's

That'd be sweet, never dug a button that old, but I see no signs of shank.

So far, my guess is flying eagle cent due to size and vdi...hoping for it at least, never dug one, let alone hold one, so couldn't say. I'll post photos throughout the cleaning process. I appreciate all the input of possibilities. I learned my lesson years ago, I don't celebrste or even call my targets before digging. If/when I find out what it is, then I'll celebrate if worthy.
