I went back after work for about an hour to the place that I found the colonial copper last weekend, and found this 1836 Matron Head in a sandy area of the woods!!! It was only about 4 inches deep. It cleaned up really nicely after a hydrogen peroxide bath. The coin still has some great detail with only a little corrosion! It is only the second large cent I have found, and they are both 1836!!!!

I also found the shoe buckle (?), which still has a working hinge! Any help with time period would be appreciated and the 1916 Merc, with no mintmark! Darn!

Can anyone ID what Newcomb variety this is?

I just gave it a peroxide bath. it was found in sand so it came right off with a damp cue tip.

Wow, that is one nice looking Coin. Congrats on the Large Cent find. Better go back and really hunt that woods, maybe use a small coil, like a 5 inch one. That coil can really get down and dirty and get into small places a larger coil can't.

Good Luck and thanks for the post.

Neil, not 100% sure with only the Obverse showing it appears to be a Newcomb 2 variety

Obv 2 : Pointed 1 in date; rounded bust tip; front line of coronet unevenly curved.

Rev B: Point of second leaf below highest leaf at second S extends beyond it, diagnostic.
