Solved! 1718 Halfpenny, now my oldest coin!

Thanks for your help guys, turns out it's 60 years older than I originally thought. The year New Orleans was founded!

Original post:

Found this copper up on a wooded slope overlooking a local lake, I've found other George's with similar designs but never a halfpenny. I don't know that much about them, and was surprised to learn that it is counterfeit. There's a real interesting story around these particular coins, apparently Britain wasn't minting silver or copper coinage during these years, due to involvement in multiple conflicts.

Date's real clear, 1778, and the few sites I visited mentioned it was possibly struck in New York at a place Machin's Mills. Is this the only variety of this halfpenny date? I don't think it's a contemporary counterfeit, it was pretty deep, just a whisper on the new Deus. Here's the obverse:

Hard to make out much detail, but it doesn't look like the bust from the couple examples I found online. Any help much appreciated, I'm stoked to have found an old copper no matter what, but would love to know more about it.

Thanks,
Steve

You're right, found an image online and it looks just like it.

Makes it my oldest coin to date!

Awesome coin Steve! We definitely need to spend more time in there... Thanks for showing me the ropes this past year, you're a good friend!
