It's a button... an old one... but what is it?

Found this today at a site that's yielded a King George III half penny, draped bust half cent, and relics dating up to today. It's a little smaller than a dime and looks to be pewter. I don't have a toothpick with me but can anyone ID it based on what's showing now? I don't know if it's rotated correctly. It'll be a day or so before I can get something on it... do I have to worry about it flaking? As of right now it seems stable.

Looking on eBay, it looks to be a War of 1812 Infantry button of some sort.

Excellent button! It is a pewter War of 1812 Infantry button like you mentioned. Looks to be vest\cuff sized. Those are tough to find since they are tiny and low conductors. Hit that place hard and dig everything. I've found these buttons at 4" deep with a VLF and the signal was hardly audible... I've also found them at 12" with a pulse machine. Worth pounding that site :occasion14:

*Edit: It looks solid and not like it will flake.... so I wouldn't worry too much about it flaking in the next day or so. You could always pack it in some dirt anyway though.

Nice save! Gently clean with a toothbrush and water then coat with hairspray to preserve it from crumbling.

Looks like Brad said it all. That button is a great one! This past spring two buddies of mine (including Brad) were killing the 1812 buttons and I had found none. Long story short, I finally pop out a pewter button and it was a script "I" button - the same one you found. I've found rarer buttons, but that one is one of my favourites.

Great find!
