An ugly bird on a branch pecking a ball

I don't know what the heck else it could be. It's about the size of a silver dollar and found in a spot that yielded relics from 1700s to today, including some military. Does anyone have any idea what it could be? I dry toothpicked it, but this is the best I've gotten it so far.

Definitely a horse rosette. From what I have found that particular back type dates more towards the early-early mid 1800s. Possibly dipping down into the 1790s too.
