I had a great time as usual Saturday & saved a little bit of history in the process! My buddy Chris & I went to Granville to check some new property. We found a new site but the field needs cutting & the woods were very thick & covered in poison ivy. I did find a tombac & small cuff flat button so we will definitely be going back. We ended the day at a site that I searched when I first got back into detecting but had wrote it off because it was very trashy. I decided to give it a few minutes & my second signal was a King George II halfpenny (only my second)! It's awesome to find something that was made when North Carolina was still a British colony! So, we decided we better stay a while. I also found 2 Indian heads, a thimble & a few other relics. My buddy Chris found an 1898 barber dime, a couple flat buttons & some other neat relics. We found a ton of trash too but well worth it. I tried a new cleaning method on my coins this time, Le Crayon a Andre steel wool tip pencils. These are made specifically for cleaning coins & I must say that I'm pretty impressed. It cleans the coin much easier than a toothpick & does not affect the patina. There's some crust a toothpick simply will not remove but this seems to do the trick. The one Indian was toast but I was able to pull a date. I'll definitely be going back & cleaning some coins I thought there was no hope for. It was a hot day but luckily the clouds rolled in after lunch & made for a pleasant afternoon. Those caught my interest. Think they might do well on pewter buttons.

Nice KG and those pencils did a great job :occasion14:

I'd be interested in this too. I have a few 1812 pewters that could benefit from more mechanical crust removal. If you find out, let me know man.

Nice kg. Going to have to get some of them penciles. Some of my best finds came from trashy sites after I finally had patients to try again.
