The square thing is,,,
IF threaded hole...anchor nut.
IF not... Washer.

Wall supports for block and brick if I am not mistaken.
Also used for roof pinning / bracket / attachments I think.

I have found and seen those square iron objects used as anchors. Threaded rods would go through 2 of them and would be used basically as AARC said as giant washers. I have seen them in place on ceiling beams in homes and barns.
Nice bit of goodies there.
