I've been feeling pretty sick the past 3 weeks or so (thought it was Lyme, but doc can't find the cause) and haven't been able to get out to detect. So it was with great happiness that I headed out yesterday feeling much better to an old home site I found last summer way out in the middle of nowhere, but now I have a much better detector. My sister came too, wielding my old detector (She's hooked now too, lol). What a hunt, I still can't believe it.

We weren't there 15 minutes before I got a really good signal: It was a coin spill! I dug a 1911 quarter dollar, was over the moon, but there was more in the hole when I re-scanned it. Then pulled a 1911 dime, then I pulled a 1918 walker half dollar. And then, about a foot and a half away found a corroded v nickel. If the day had ended right then, I would have gone home happy.

IMG_20170702_182000.jpg IMG_20170702_182022.jpg

Next good signal was a 1 reale coin from 1738 in good condition I could not believe my luck.

Happy doesn't begin to describe it.

Next good signal was a Hibernia copper in poor condition but i could make out the date 1781. Yet another first for me. And more adrenaline.

Then, to end the day, I found a little old copper that was so corroded and encrusted that I didn't think I'd get any detail from it:
IMG_20170702_182201_kindlephoto-309417486.jpg

But once home I did quick baths of peroxide on it, gently scraped away some crud with a toothpick, and then soaked it overnight in mineral oil and managed to see some bits of detail, but I don't know what it is. I hope one of you will recognize it.
IMG_20170703_174627_kindlephoto-330787565.jpg IMG_20170703_174812_kindlephoto-330667768.jpg

It is copper, 21 mm wide, weighs 2 grams, and has a crown at top center on one side, and on the other side, a circular design (wreath maybe?) with the date inside the circle at the lower part. The date I can just make out as 17_9.

What a way to end an excellent day. Love my new detector. My poor sister only found some old bullets and nails, but she literally just started detecting a few weeks ago and she's still on the learning curve.

Well thanks for reading, and best of luck to all. And if someone has thoughts on what that corroded copper is let me know, it would be fun to have an ID on it.

That was an amazing hunt, well done. The detail of that reale is incredible. Congrats. O.k now for the unidentifiable coin. Great pics btw. One side has a crown, and the reverse has what looks like a lyre/harp, inside the circle. If I had to venture a guess, I'd say it was a Brittish Colonial, but not one of Great Brittain. I think it's from one of the many countries of the Empire. ie India,Cypress, blah, blah, blah. Maybe one of our Brittish friends can I.d. it.

That was a heck of a hunt. The circa 1920 coin spill was nice but I'm partial to the Colonial coins. In fact I dug the same 1738 one real here in PA.

Your reale is in even better condition than the one I found, Steve, beautiful coin! It's really amazing the beautiful things just waiting for us to dig them up... such fun.

Thanks Itsmine, I've been looking and looking to try to find a match somewhere online, no luck so far. I think what I'm going to do is try cleaning it more tomorrow to see if it brings up more detail. It's hard to know if there's more detail hidden under the crud, or if all the detail is going to disappear along with the crud, lol. We'll see.

Blistering hunt Rustic! Mitt full of silvers and coppers topped off with the beautiful 1738 Real. Now that's a great day in anybody's book, I'd bet on it! The site is worthy of a return visit for sure if this any indication of what you pulled up from the first visit with the Deus. Congrats.

Wow, what a day. Congrats on some beautiful coins, always surprised what is found in "the middle of nowhere"...if you think about it everywhere was in the middle of nowhere at one time! Whereabouts are you in Western Mass? How are you liking the new Deus? I've had mine for about three months and only beginning to understand it. Quite a few of us detecting here in the Berkshires, we've been talking about starting a club. Anyways, congrats again on your finds,

Steve

Congratulations on a Super Hunt.
Love The Walker and Barbers. So many good targets.
That Spanish Silver is illegal as in "The International Rules of Metal Detecting"
Rule #3 states,, "Nobody who is switching from a newbie machine to a high budget machine, may dig a Spanish Silver in their first 100 hours." lol.
Congrats on a really great hunt and good luck with your new machine.

WOW awesome hunt! Glad you love the Deus, you will truly find so much more with it than the 250. Make sure you go back to EVERY good spot you've got up before because it will find it all. Hot program is the way to go. I hunt western mass as well, what town is this? Congratulations again on an awesome day

Well I found the mystery copper on the internet, and you were spot on, Itsmine, it's not British: It's from a French colony, French Guiana, Colony of Cayenne. Here's the pic I found of it, same year as the corroded one I found:

I can see the date on mine now, 1789, and I see the A underneath. Also, I can make out the first and last S on the word "SOUS", and the crown on the obverse...

So, mystery solved, except for how a coin from 1789 French Guiana ended up in the hills of Massachusetts....

Thanks for your thoughts and good wishes, everyone.

Aaah! I've been searching for the ID on that copper but no luck. Nice job figuring out what it is, and what an interesting thing to find!

Big congratulations on a world class hunt! The Spanish silver is a real prize, and your big silver spill would have had me doing backflips.

Great job. The pistareen is in excellent shape. You'll find the Deus sucks stuff right out of the ground.
