I've been feeling pretty sick the past 3 weeks or so (thought it was Lyme, but doc can't find the cause) and haven't been able to get out to detect. So it was with great happiness that I headed out yesterday feeling much better to an old home site I found last summer way out in the middle of nowhere, but now I have a much better detector. My sister came too, wielding my old detector (She's hooked now too, lol). What a hunt, I still can't believe it.

We weren't there 15 minutes before I got a really good signal: It was a coin spill! I dug a 1911 quarter dollar, was over the moon, but there was more in the hole when I re-scanned it. Then pulled a 1911 dime, then I pulled a 1918 walker half dollar. And then, about a foot and a half away found a corroded v nickel. If the day had ended right then, I would have gone home happy.

IMG_20170702_182000.jpg IMG_20170702_182022.jpg

Next good signal was a 1 reale coin from 1738 in good condition I could not believe my luck.

Happy doesn't begin to describe it.

Next good signal was a Hibernia copper in poor condition but i could make out the date 1781. Yet another first for me. And more adrenaline.

Then, to end the day, I found a little old copper that was so corroded and encrusted that I didn't think I'd get any detail from it:
IMG_20170702_182201_kindlephoto-309417486.jpg

But once home I did quick baths of peroxide on it, gently scraped away some crud with a toothpick, and then soaked it overnight in mineral oil and managed to see some bits of detail, but I don't know what it is. I hope one of you will recognize it.

It is copper, 21 mm wide, weighs 2 grams, and has a crown at top center on one side, and on the other side, a circular design (wreath maybe?) with the date inside the circle at the lower part. The date I can just make out as 17_9.

What a way to end an excellent day. Love my new detector. My poor sister only found some old bullets and nails, but she literally just started detecting a few weeks ago and she's still on the learning curve.

Well thanks for reading, and best of luck to all. And if someone has thoughts on what that corroded copper is let me know, it would be fun to have an ID on it.

That Spanish was probably dropped a few years into circulation. Nice early site

Love the half pistareen. Sure dont see many posted from New England but when they are, they are usually the complete coin and not cut up like down here

Hi Crabstang, I had the Garrett Ace 250, and now have upgraded to the xp deus. I had a lot of fun with the Garrett, it is a good little machine, but now I'm super happy with the Deus, it brings a whole new level to detecting- I can pick which frequency to use depending on the site, and it's fast so can pick up coins between nails.

Wow, amazing hunt, enjoy the high. I'm still stoked and all I did was read your post. I doubt if the mystery coin is from the US mint.

Thanks, Dave. I'm on cloud nine. I never thought I'd find one in such good condition.

Thanks Loco, I think you're right, I've looked hi and low on the internet with no luck. I'll start looking at other countries' 18th century coinage, maybe I'll stumble on a picture of it then.:icon_thumleft:

Well thanks for reading, and best of luck to all. And if someone has thoughts on what that corroded copper is let me know, it would be fun to have an ID on it.[/QUOTE]

First off absolutely FANTASTIC finds. Secondly the un identified coin, what makes you think its copper? I think It looks like a silver coin that was in a fire and/or it's severely corroded. The crown looks suspiciously like the crown on a 4 real. Anyone else agree?

Also looks like the crown on the back of a Swedish OR but the material, at least I your photos, doesn't look copper.

I hope we get a proper ID on this

Hi Juan, thanks for your post, the reason I thought it was copper was that it rang in at 82 at the 11.6 frequency on my Deus, which is usually copper. I do have a silver test kit through, and i should have tested it to be sure.

So I just tested, and it tests negative for silver, so it is copper for sure. I've been scouring the internet for possibilities, but you've given me a lead in the swedish coins, I'll check the old Swedish coinage out next. Thanks for that tip, I would never have thought to look up old coins from Sweden.

That was a heck of a hunt. The circa 1920 coin spill was nice but I'm partial to the Colonial coins. In fact I dug the same 1738 one real here in PA.
