Had a great metal detecting adventure yesterday! I found civil war bullets, colonial buckles and buttons but the main find was a gold ring with an eagle on it! I have not been able to find a similar ring anywhere. I believe it is a military ring since it has the eagle with what appears to be an olive branch in his mouth. What I thought were scratches on the back appears to be some sort of makers mark or symbols? If you figure it out let me know! video here

I dont know if this is significant or not (and crusader has already posted a similar crest on a livery button) but it looks like a prominent early Virginia family by the name of tazewell had a coat of arms in the 18th century crested by an eagles head facing left (as the eagle would in a seal impression left by this ring) with a branch in its beak.

Link to info here:

https://books.google.co.uk/books?id...q=eagle branch in beak virginia crest&f=false

Might be worth a bit of further research.

Stunning, only wish I had gotten here earlier to click the nominate banner button about a dozen times. Love the photo, looks great on the banner...something about old gold that's immediately recognizable...congrats on a historic find.

Congrats on the stunning find! Really interested to hear how the ID goes. If it was somehow attributed to a founding father or other person of significance as huntsman53 pointed out I wouldn't be surprised!

Fingers cross George Washington was into chickens!

That may be the Phoenix Bird, which is a sacred fire bird in many different cultures.
Here is an example which looks strikingly similar minus the flames.

This particular picture if supposed to reflect a christian symbol.

I'm no expert, but my first thought is that the hallmarks look Egyptian in nature.
That middle hallmark looks a little bit like a bird, which is the Egyptian hallmark for gold (according to google).
I'm not saying it's ancient, but you may want to spend some time talking with experts.
Check back and let us know what you find out!

I actually looked the the Phoenix also and thought it looked similar. The jury is still in deliberation!

Did you ever find out exactly what this is or the makers marks ID'd?

Nice find. A Colonial Eagle would be fantastic but the more I look at it the more it looks like a chicken.

Amazing find! Tried for a bit to see if I could decipher the marks but no dice. They do look like Hieroglyphics: Penguin(?), Rooster, Foot

Catching up on posts today and am astounded at your beautiful ring. What fun that would be to pull up your scoop and find that beauty staring back at you. The buttons and coins are so very nice too.
