Snap for a lot of different things. Most were military and had a post with a peg on that this went over. I had one on the civil war holster that belonged to my great grandfather for example. Most the ones I have see were on leather.

It would be very hard to date this button, first of all its very ugly, also it has a big mouth. and her leggs are to short also I dont think she is who she says she is. doesnt look like a button with all those little flaps on it maybe its one of those things that go on the bottom of a chair that have those little nail flap things and when you pound them into the wood it stays!!! Sorry for the humor..... Happy hunting
