After reading all the legends, went gold panning, again, sigh, and didn't really see anything in the pan. However this time, I ran the black sands through a newly purchased gold spiral machine. That thing really works! Found these large flakes today, plus some dust or flour gold! Eureka! Gold rush is on. This is East Coast gold and it is very coarse. View attachment IMG_0428.jpg

I think bedrock is 20' down. Won't be going there but can you IMAGINE what's down there? You hit water at about 10 feet, so it would be a no win scenario to go deep.

I heard there is some in NH, the state I am from, but I have never actually found any. East coast gold is extremely rare. Congrats!

York County, Pa just over the Maryland line. The east coast gold belt goes from eastern Alabama to Nova Scotia. Here's the haul, plus 3 large pickers, not shown from the last couple weeks. View attachment IMG_0429.jpg Gold is very rough. A few pieces have micro quartz attached and some has the black manganese with it. There are also a lot of tiny "specs" in the little bag. The one on the far right, bottom is my favorite. Very gnarly with black on it for contrast.

Yes, and big enough the US Mint set up shop in Charlotte, NC and Dahlonega, GA. Virginia had a huge gold production area just before the Civil War. I even found gold in NJ once! Beach hasn't been fun. Couple goodies there and about 5 pounds of clad, so this is different. And the creek water is ice cold!

I had no idea there was so much gold around here, I have a small stream going through my yard, with a clay bottom. Perhaps I should try some panning there some time.

Yes, you should. You will probably need an optivisor to see it. Necessary equipment is pan, bucket and shovel. A cheap sluice for added fun. We really started finding it when I bought a spiral type 12 volt gold machine. It really works. Also need a good hand lens and a lot of patience trying to get the gold! I think my spot in this modern era is commercially mine-able, although we all know the government would not allow it. I may send out a few ounces of black sand for assay. That would be interesting. Probably costs too much to bother.
