So I couldn't go to sleep last night so I stayed up all night and went metal detecting at sunrise at the same spot I went to yesterday and found a v nickel. I use to be a high stakes gambler ( haven't drank or gambled in 14 years....long story) lol Which is why I love metal protecting so much, because it's the only thing that gives me the same high I get when I find something I love. So I have a great day yesterday and WIN, so of course I go back the next day and LOSE. Nothing but 4 Lincolns and 100 pieces of trash for 4 hours no sleep. I'm telling you it's the same thing as gambling at the casino! Goodnight. :laughing

I definitely understand your point. I've come to enjoy just being out hunting and not weighing everything by the outcome. I've gotten some very nice finds this year, but the vast majority are dubious relics and just junk. What I've learned, though, is that most of the experience of the time out is worth a lot in itself, and great finds are special moments in a really good time. A bad day detecting beats a great day at work! :laughing7:

My thought is that I gain health by the exercise and being out doing what I love. There is a very high value in that but it does not fit in a wallet.

part of the high is in the "chase" and it seems that a lot of us do a lot of chasing. So when we do find something really good, it is kind of like the icing on the cake (hopefully some really good icing). on those non productive days, I still see myself getting some fresh air and some sort of exercise so still consider it a win for me.

Glad you had a fun night hunt :icon_thumleft:

IMHO, its all about the fun of the hunt and the relationships you foster on the way. The rest is just stuff.

Besides the purchase price of your detector and gas money, you really can't lose with metal detecting. Going out digging is like getting free lottery tickets to me. Time spent outdoors is not anything to get upset about, even if it turns into a pile of rusty pulltabs and some burned calories. Now that I live in an isolated place where I cannot do any detecting, I really appreciate the detecting opportunities I had years ago.
