I found this dog license today. I thought it was interesting because I believe it to be from 1923!

It reads:

NYS
204264
Dog License
23

"NYS" possibly is for "New York State".

What do you think? Is 23 just another registration number or a date?

My Dad also made a couple of interesting finds, including his oldest wheat penny, a 1936!

Just wanted to share these finds.

UPDATE

Just figured out 100% that this is dog license from 1923. Searched "1923 nys dog license" and many pictures came up. Here is one that is also from 1923:

Very nice. Weird that the state was the one in charge of a dog licenses it goes by County here in Pennsylvania. I only have two dog licenses one is 1924 and the other is 1918. Congrats on yours older ones are always nice.

It is a dog tag. The registration # would be the 20426. Congrats on a nice old tag.

I have a few NYC dog licenses. I don't know when it began but the NY State Department of Health was responsible for issuing dog licenses. I think they now allow the local municipalities to issue board of health dog licenses. NYC issues licenses to dog owners who reside locally.
I recently recovered a 1922 McKean County, Pa. dog license. I guess each state is different but it is all about the money.
Congrats on your finds.
