I discovered a field of 'just' 24 acre with signs of roman occupation. It took me one afternoon to roughly figure out the most promising area. Yesterday we started gridding with 3 detectors for 4hrs. It took a while for the first roman artifacts. The first good find was on me, a nice terret ring. Soon after my buddy dug a beautiful amimal brooch with a bull. Coins were rare and i still didn't know exactly how to read this site. During my first raid on this field i dug a medieval strap end and two silver coins. One is toast the other is a 1806 III Stuber. Yesterday i dug VIII Heller Cologne 1576 and a beautiful medieval Denarius probably 13th C. Still not IDed properly, seems to be rare. I completed the silver run through 2000 years today with a Roman Denarius. I need Cru Dad's help for ID here. :dontknow: Didn't find a match....
Another first class find is the whatsit with a dog face/theatre mask.
Oldest find is a frag of a Neolithic flint blade, youngest and most delicious find was a bucket full of fresh harvested potatoes. :hello2:

Thanks for looking!

Great ! It looks like a silver denarius from the roman republic.

The head-shaped artifact is fantastic too. It may be a part of a roman statuette.

Republic is my thought too, looking for a match right now... The head thing has two broken off 'ears' on the back, nearly looking like some kind of fancy buckle.

Obverse shows Laureate Beardless head (Triumphus?) right with SER behind SVLP (VL in monogram) before. So belongs to SERVIUS SULPICIUS of 51BC.
Reverse is Naval trophy between naked bound captive standing right, point of spear above his head and clothed figure wearing Petasus on left.

According to info example below. Servius Sulpicius Denarius. 51 BC. SER SULP, laureate head of Apollo right / Naval trophy (aplustre, anchor & mast), clothed figure left, Macedonian captive right

Servius Sulpicius Denarius. 51 BC. SER SULP, laureate head of Apollo right / Naval trophy (aplustre, anchor & mast), clothed figure left, Macedonian captive right. Syd 931, Cr438/1. * Sear RCV 408 * WildWinds.com

References are Sears Vol One (2001) No 408, RRC 438/1.

The Rev type is thought to depict the auction of captives following a naval victory

Above was Cru'Dad's ID for the denarius which is a very early one - CONGRATS.

I love the Medieval dude with the baseball bat. Now that is an unusual looking coin with heads on both sides! Can't wait for an update on that one, I bet its worth twice the denarius ++.

Just found some more Info about the reverse of the Denarius:

'The naval trophy shown on the reverse of this coin probably relates to the victory over Macedon's navy achieved by the moneyer's ancestor, P. Sulpicius Galba Maximus, in 209/8 BC. After hearing of the Roman disaster at Cannae in 216 BC, Philip V, under the advice of Demetrius of Pharos, secretly allied with the Carthaginians. However, while returning to Philip's court to report the terms of the treaty, the Macedonian and Carthaginian emissaries were intercepted by the Romans, exposing the secret arrangement. This event along with Philip's pretensions in Illyria led to the First Macedonian War.'

Thanks for the ID Crudad! I was kind of lost with that one.
Cru, that coin is killer. With about 13mm in size there was enough space for that spooky looking dude! First thought in the field was baseball bat too:icon_scratch:, but you can see he holds a key with the ring under his hand and the bit with a cross.
If this coin is worth twice the denarius i fall right over because the Denarius already falls in the 1000 Euro class as far as i see....

Luckily i know the landowner very good and he has no interest in any of the finds....

Not sure where you got your figures (yours is a poor example compared to the one you linked) but the one I linked to in much nicer condition sold for -$94.39, 12th May 1999. So maybe a £100.

I know its not a base-ball bat, just a joke. I think its St Peter with the Key.

I just looked at the pics, sorry. :tongue3: Around 100 sounds better, i nearly got a heart attack... That way you probably be right with twice for the hammered. I didn't sell anyway. :occasion14:

I know you don't sell. It may make a little more, hard to be sure at auction. Its only a gut feeling on the hammered, it may turn out to be half the value, it was a WAG. It's got the look though, I think King on one side & St Peter on the other, the Lombardic 'T' looks early hammered to me, maybe 12-13th C. (But the King looks like a throw back from the Byzantine period)

Fascinating. To have access/ability to hunt in areas that hold items of such antiquity. And......be able to dig them!
Thank you for sharing the pictures.

Auction prices are often unforseeable...but i think the sold coin isn't that much better. The generic coin on WW is really stunning condition. I wonder who bought the 1000 Euro coin i posted. :icon_scratch:

I found 13th C. Pennys minted in Munster and Osnabrück/Germany with similar appearance, but there are thousands of different hammered silvers here and i didn't even know if it's a domestic coin. We'll see. I let you know.

Just update this post when you get the ID.

I was badly in need of a new site. I explored for some time and now it worked out. I knew there was a third site at this village...

I cant decide which one is more awesome, the republic denarius or the medieval silver.
I love medieval silver.
I have looked through about 30 webpages with hundreds of medieval silver coins and none have matched.
I think the medieval coin would be between 1100-1200 the later ones are already finer, the big eyes and bulky figures make me believe it is earlier than the 1200's...

Congrats on those awesome finds! Good work.
