Tony and I got out for an entire day on an old site that I've been hunting for 12 years. There are always a few more targets left in the ground and today was no exception. Dug the expected musket balls, crusty coppers, flat buttons and other assorted relics. Some highlights are the 1890 5 Cent and the brass ships spike.

The find of the day for me came early in the hunt. I almost didn't dig it because it was such a weak signal and a very low tone. After I flipped the dirt it jumped up to a much higher tone. As soon as I saw it I knew it was an old silver and first thought it was a cut cob. A closer look revealed that it is definitely silver but not a cob. There appears to be a Fleur de Lis on one side but that may not be the case...depending on how you orient the coin. It is tiny and very thin. It appears VERY old but attempts to ID it have been so far unsuccessful. Hoping the folks at T-Net can help in that regard.

Thanks for looking!

Looks like a hammered! Got a kind of French look to it, but I have no clue really.

Hammered is exactly what I thought as well...and French. I was kind of hoping that you would jump in and know exactly what it was . . . lol. I'll keep searching!

I would if it were British, so you can knock that off the search list.

OK, it's a best guess but I think I know what happen here which might help the search. It looks like its been clipped all the way to the inner circle & the inscription around the outside of the coin has therefore been cut off. Making the ID a bit tougher. (I've seen this happen before)

That was what I thinking when I saw the silver also Cru, it's a clip leaving the inner circle.

Cool recovery as it's a small little silver, congrats on sniffing it out along with the other Fish scale and coppers.

Just a thought Romeo if you take part of the inner circle of the image, say of an early Jetton as this (Just and example), it could be very well be what Cru referred to as part of a clipped coin.

I'd say you're right on the money there. It's so frustrating not being able to positively ID this but I'm convinced that there is enough showing that someone who really knows their French coins or jetons will be able to ID this one.

When you look at it like this the images on the front and back appear to be the same.

I'm not aware of any silver Jettons, so pretty sure its a coin.

There is a French Jetton with similar design but not Silver. Cru is close with the cut down coin. This gives a lot more options, still thinking French.

Looking at pictures of those, they all seem to be a head on one side and a design on the other, nothing appears to match the coin OP has. And OP if you will allow me to, I'll post this on numista. The website is originally French and so there's lots of French coin experts. Maybe someone can identify it there.

If this hammered fragment had been found in the UK I would have been looking at the King Stephen Pennies, or early Norman coinage. The Fluer-De Lis cross appeared on a number of these, like Cru said maybe French, good find for over there though...Tough one to ID.
