My buddy called me a couple weeks ago and told me that he found something underneath his floor... a 10' deep cistern! As the house settled, the floor raised up where the mouth of the cistern was. He tore out the floor so he could fill up the cistern and collapse the top so it will sit below the floor. He asked me if I would like to dig in the cistern for bottles. Of course I couldn't turn him down! Unfortunately, the cistern only had about a half inch of dirt in it, so it was a quick dig :laughing7:. Luckily, he had planned on using the dirt below the floor to fill the cistern, so I decided to do some sifting as well. I've been at it for 3 days and I am beat! I've sifted enough dirt to fill the cistern 3/4 of the way! Anyway, on day one I found over 50 buttons, maybe 10 marbles, an 1871 IH and a few other goodies. Day two I didn't find too much. Maybe 10 more buttons and a couple marbles. Day three (today) I got a HUGE haul of stuff! 57 buttons, 20 marbles, two very old pipe pieces, a bunch of slate pencils, some musket percussion caps, an 1865 IH, a really cool carved wooden eagle head, an ivory pipe stem, and a few other brass whatsits. Oh yea, and a 1781 Spanish Half Reale!!! :headbang:. It's pretty toasted, but I'll take it anyway! This is my second Spanish silver of the year. Other than the 1871 IH, everything pictured was found TODAY! Has anyone ever seen a clay marble that big?!?! It's about 2" in diameter! Anyway, enjoy the video and HH!

Nice job. The other materials shown with the reale are probably not earlier than 1850's-1870's. The reale easily could have been circulated up until then. Wasn't until the last century till coins became commonplace.

That is an impressive haul.
Congrats on the Spanish Silver and 1865 IHP.

Is that a metal arrowhead? Thats cool! I love the buttons, marbles too, most looked like glazed clay marbles from China. The decorated ones are definitely from China, 1800s. I was just learning more about buttons, and found some photos you might like to see: China Buttons Sample Card.jpg China Buttons.jpg

And these are decorated clay marbles from China! Great finds!

What a great selection of buttons and marbles, really starting to like the ones made out of china that you recovered. The IH looks really crisp under the crud, should clean up very nice with a soaking. I tip my hat on your efforts in the sifting, and recoveries.

Wow, what a dig ! Those are some great finds. I really like the clay marbles, and yes, I have a clay "shooter" that is yellow and was found a few years back in a field. It is without a doubt the focus of my clay marble display case. I like your China marbles, and have yet to find one like that. Those buttons will also make for a great display.

1871 is a great date for an IHP. It’s not a ‘77, but the ‘71s don’t come along very often. Nice job putting in some serious effort and getting rewarded for it.

Thanks everyone! It was a LOT of hard work, that's for sure. I went back and sifted the rest of the dirt on that side of the room and found some pretty cool stuff. I'll post that stuff later when I get it all cleaned up.
