Despite my previous assessment that this season hunts were over, I managed to get ouf for a few short hunts. The ground is partially frozen and some days we had some major (for late fall) snow accumulations. Did find a few decent finds, nothing major but I'm still happy with them.

My favorite would be a 24th Regiment of foot British officers or Sergeants large button. I would think from late 1830's to early 1850's The silver plating partially survived which is always a welcome sight.

Also, found 65th Regiment button. Could be officers, I believe it used to be gold guild as I have found an other one in excellent condition at the same spot this spring. Late 1830's early 1840's

My very first Blacksmith's Token. Very strangely it took me over a 100 George III Halfpennies to finally get one.

Got a few 1812 to 1837 Halfpenny tokens. 3 Jew harps, few glass buttons, croatal bell, two 1876 Victoria Cents and Edward VII (1905) 10 cents in a great shape. Also a beautiful small colonial button with a snowflake motif (how convenient :tongue3:) and a strange piece of silver with hand engraved birds (no idea what it is).

Glad to be able to get out even for 1-2 hours hunts, but winter IS coming! Grrrrrr...

Thanks Steve.
Yes, legend says that he was making them in the same general area I'm hunting at but as I have mentioned , even here they appear to be much rarer than the usual counterfeit George halfpennies. Really happy to find one before the years end.
I wouldn't mind finding one of those stunning early US cents you're finding, so I think every location has it's own advantages. Congrats again, just a stunning find.

Well
I hope you find a Nova and I a Blacksmith token! I’ve heard of some filtering down into NY State so maybe I have a chance. As for the Novas, apparently they were banned from use in 1787 and sold off at discount. After that they scattered everywhere, perhaps to Anton-land! Lol

Lol. One can only dream finding a liquidation type bucket of them.

All good stuff. Even though that Blacksmith is listed as one of the common ones it will never process through my brain that way because of how much I would like to find a bust type one.

Nice way to close out 2017

Thanks Tony. I hope for a few more hunts before the freeze. But it doesn't look promising weather wise. Enjoy the sunshine, you won't see much of it coming back to Canada.

That post cracked me up! Great finds as always.

Winter is important...it lets the relics regrow, and makes sure we stay sane! But if the cravings get too bad in February and you want to borrow my snow plow, generator, and 300 feet of extension cords (hair dyer=thawed ground), I’m here for ya, bro. :laughing7:

That's funny how the assertion of the regrowth of the relics in winter and that of the importance of staying sane has ended up in the same phrase. :laughing7: As for the metal detecting addiction I actually went on a hunt today (100% sure it's the last one of the season, you'll understand why) the ground was frozen solid so I had no way of knowing what was in the earth/ice chunks that I managed to brake apart. So to avoid damaging a potentially good relic I would just put those chunks of ice in my back pack to be thawed at home. A bit pathetic. So Yes, the season is definitively over and No, I'm not at all addicted to relics hunting. Here's a pic of one of the "treasures" frozen solid (and no, it's not a cow pie).

Turned out to be a nice coat sized Victorian regiment button.
