Today I did my usual check of the CoinStar machine just before my wife and I started shopping. In the reject tray was a huge pile of dirty coins!

The total counted out at 163 coins!

While getting my hands dirty getting the coins out of the tray I had my wive go get a plastic bag from the produce department so I could carry them out. When I got home I methodically inspected every one, they were so dirty I had to carefully check them out.

All the coins appear to have been in the water for a long period of time, possible submerged in mud and gravel. I've done a lot of water hunting over the years so I know what they look like coming out of the water. Amazingly while inspecting the coins I discover 141 Lincoln cents, 4 clad quarters, 4 nickels, 2 Canadian cents, 4 wheat pennies, a 1958 silver dime, and a 1868 2 Cent Piece! The coins appear to have come out of a river or a lake from some guy using a detector, why he didn't check them out before dumping them in a Coinstar machine is a mystery? ....Hey, at least clean the coins.:icon_scratch:

Wow. That's a heck of a way to find a two center. No way a seasoned detectorist did that. Maybe a husband or wife who was sick of dirty coins lying around.

I'm cleaning my clad now, what a pain in the butt this year, I never dig so my clad... But, I save all my 2 cent and rosies.. lol If my coins won't go thru coin star... I take them and put them in the salvation army bucket outside my store.... I won't ever leave any coins in "My Coinstar" machine !!! I don't want to get other people reaching in "My Reject" slot LOL

The two cent piece is a real nice find IMO. Who puts that in a CoinStar?

Congrats on the find.

They do look like water recovered coins, and that 2 cent piece was probably overlooked as a clad quarter. Somebody needs some glasses! Nice find!!

Looks like a Cladiator cashed in and missed a few older finds. Ive met a lot of great fellas in this great hobby and some guys just need some quick change. I don’t judge. But his loss is your gain! Nice snag!

Could have been some kid who inherited a collection from the hobbyist who found them. Their loss is your gain !

WTG Man! I always check the one at my store as well and sometimes get some wheats or an occasional silver but never a 2 cent piece! That is great!

As to why they all ended up there? Maybe a novice detectorist just starting out or an older one who doesn't see so well and missed it! There was one local guy here a couple years back who pulled a reale outta the beach and had it thrown in with a bunch of clad coins and it was noticed by another with better eyesight a few months later!

Or your average teenage kid, tired of asking dad for money, decided that raiding one of those old "metal detecting jars" he's got lying around the house would be the best way to make a secret score. Hell, I have a buddy of mine who keeps all his finds in German beer steins all around the house. He's nuts :)
