The first hour was nice as the ground was still frozen but it soon turn to soup & warmed up so much I had to take off 2 layers! As sometimes happens the best find came from a previous blank area & we were not expecting much today. This site is mostly 5th-6th C, we had only had 1 middle Saxon pin-head that we thought to be a freak, so when Cru'dad got the sceat we were both very surprised. I remarked that we hadn't even had any Saxon strap-ends (another friend of sceats), & would you believe it, on the same run Cru'dad got one!:metaldetector: Cortes fights back.
5 Hour mud workout;

Livery Button
4 Roman Coins
Jetton
13-14th C Buckle which has a beast head on top, I think its a spur buckle? (a first)
Part of a Roman Key Handle
1921 Florin
Bruce Castle token from a famous private school in London (dated 1827-79). Its produced by Rowland Hill who invented the Penny Post & given to kids who did well. Never heard of such a thing until today, read more;
Rowland Hill 1795-1880
Saxon Strapend
Circa 700AD Saxon Sceat - ''This is an interesting contemporary imitation of Series BI.''

Great looking Sceat, congrats to Cru Dad for the getting such a crisp silver. That's a really cool token, liking it!
Gleamed this off the Colchester site.

No wonder I found no match the museum came back with this;

''This is an interesting contemporary imitation of Series BI.''

In other words an early counterfeit?
Yes, but oddly the silver & weight are pretty good, so hard to work out the motivation.

What’s to say the difference between a new die variety and a contemporary counterfeit? Especially considering the silver content, weight, and quality? Has Antiquities seen this variety of counterfeit before?

Either way I actually think the cool factor went up being an early counterfeit.

Heard phrases like this before too. If a coin specialist don't know he says counterfeit. Happend with celtic gold once. Took me three (!) years to get my coin back because it went from museum to museum for ID and was finally recorded as contemporary counterfeit.
