Well that went on Ebay quickly...

I wish I would have known .. As his 3rd great grandson, I would have liked to have had a shot at it myself. Last I had heard, the OP was going to keep it.

Holy crap!!!! Just found the eBay listing, $8000! I wouldn't sell any of my finds, though if I were offered $8000 for one then I might change my mind on that! That money definitely pays for your metal detector a few times over, or something nice for your wife like you mentioned earlier. That is an incredible amount of money for something that you found in the dirt, and still there are some people out there who call it a silly hobby! Congrats on that!

Calabash, nice find. I'm following along as a couple years ago I found the mate to yours. Never been able to find much info on it though. I'll try to get a good picture of it. I need to get back to where I found it and try for the other one as I never have.

Probably a lot of rare stuff out there that is not quite as rare as first thought because most don't know or care what they have. Its all a matter of what people will collect and how much they will pay for it A much older and unique handcrafted and engraved silver pomander such as mine would likely not fetch the kind of money many machine made copper cufflinks or buttons will.

A cheap one until I can decide on a very good brand-name one to buy.

Something is different about it [in my opinion] than what others posted known examples of.
