Hi all, I spied this old bell in a yard and asked the owner about it. He said his aunt gave it to him before she passed away.
Would you sell it I asked and he said 75 bucks so I brought it to the house.
I would say it weighs about 50 pounds and is 18 inches tall. Has a nice sound also.
The only stamps on it are USA 3.
Always wanted one. :coffee2:

That is Way COOL!
Looks like it may be an old firehouse or schoolhouse bell!
Congrats on that awesome recovery!

When I was a kid my neighbors had one of those they would ring at dinner and when the streetlights went on for all thier kids they had to come home. I was embarrassed for them and glad my parents didn't get one lol

When I was a kid there was a house about ten blocks away and we would sneak into their yard late at night a ring it and run. What a terrible delinquent I was:tongue3:

I have no clue, but it reminds me of a train bell.

Too large for a train bell I would say.

Great score on the bell, now you'll just have to make a cradle for it.

I believe its an old school bell. My friend has one on a post in his front yard (which is 240 acres). No problems if anyone wants to ring it. It would have a faint sound outside his property lines, but would do its job right next to the old schoolhouse to alert the children its time to start.

too funny, I WAS that kid haha. Parents would stand on the porch and ring the dinner bell for us. If you missed it they ate without you.

Right now, bronze is about $1.65 a pound.
Personally I think it would be a sin to.let that bell end up in a scrap yard.
I would try to find out first if the "aunt" was a teacher in an old one room school house, or perhaps married to an engineer on the railroad. The bell may have some significant history.
Congratulations on the save.

Very nice bell! You got a good deal there. You should build some kind of covered stand or mount for it as a display. I'm picturing it as yard/garden art.

My neighbor had one like that, she ended up hating me for ringing that thing so many times, my mom got to hate that bell from having to listen to that old lady call her and complain about me ringing it so much. As I remember it was a schoolhouse bell.

I would say you got a real deal on an old piece of local history there. Like another member suggested I would ask the seller some more questions to try and identify it's purpose. I'd also be searching for the remaining pieces to get it back to completeness. Darn cool find mate!:headbang:
