Went back to the worked out Saxon/ Norman site today. As always signals were few, and small. The finds though covered a fantastic time range. The finds in oldest were, a bronze age spear tip, a worn roman copper coin, a late Saxon hammered silver coin fragment. And the curious coin of Henry III 1247-72. Someone as gone to the trouble of hammering the coin down in diameter, there's a heavy rim on the coin. At first I thought, it was a recent copy, but tested it and it is silver.:dontknow::dontknow::icon_scratch:

Perhaps it was the beginnings of a love token on that H3. Great digs as usual Rob. The Bronze Age tip is incredible

I have found coppers, from King Georges to Large Cents with hammered down rims like that. Never found a silver coin hammered like that though.

Yep same here Steve. Wondering if it's a modern copy, someone as been playing around with. The site as been massively detected over the years, the coin could have been planted, to fool.:laughing7:

Over here, people used to hammer coins into rings. Here is a pic of a modern US silver quarter, that someone started to turn into a ring, but it was lost before it was finished. Just an idea.

Excellent finds sir!

Hello pepperj, there's not enough detail to id the mint. Robert.

Here's some pictures of the Saxon coin fragment. Looks like a coin of Aethelred II 978 - 1016, First small cross type. Robert.

That's the first thing I thought about Tom when I saw the pic. I'm guilty of doing that in Jr. High School back in the mid-60s. We used to beat on silver quarters (which they all were back then) with the back side of a spoon bowl from the cafeteria, but it took quite a while to turn it into a ring. That was the big craze for a while back in those days. And I believe that might be exactly what was being attempted with the coin shown in this post.
