Hello All,

We finally got all our finds together and organized from 2017 for this post. Well it was quite a ride, with the relics really outshining the coins this year. The KING of Military buttons was Shaneglang with his outstanding Eagle Voltigeurs button and his French Marine Artillery button from the late 1700s! We tied in 2017 for the most silvers ever dug in a year (44), and we had some outstanding Spanish and Capped coin finds. 2017 was a year for quantity as well as quality, which is a rare combination. It was also a year of many "firsts." First off, here are some highlights as the finds were coming out of the ground during our hunting in 2017:

Seated Quarter and a nice English gun flint:

More silver:

Spanish silver, including a counterfeit 8 Reales!

More silver coming up:

Philippine Occupation coin, Silver Catholic Medallion and 1940s Quarter washed out of the ground:

IMG_5118A.jpg IMG_5121.JPG IMG_5162.JPG

Half Real, Antebellum gold ring or wax fob seal, and Seated Half Dime:

IMG_5239A.jpg IMG_5246.JPG IMG_5316a.jpg

Half Real, c.1808 Artillery Button, and a Six-Pounder Cannonball!

IMG_5341r.jpg IMG_5419a.jpg IMG_5625a.jpg

And my star find for the year--an almost perfect George Washington Inaugural Button! I am STILL floored to have dug one of these in Louisiana of all places!

IMG_0779.JPG

And now for the year totals. Let's start with glass finds. Just my and Diggergirl's portion of the glass buttons, doll parts, and marbles:

buttons.JPG Dollparts2.JPG Marbles.JPG

Here are the (few) glass bottles we dug, as well as some iron finds:

iron finds.JPG bottles2A.jpg

To say we pushed the limits is putting it mildly. This was a screen shot from my cell phone on the hottest day I've ever detected in.

103 degrees, feels like 127.

WILL. NEVER. DO. THAT. AGAIN. :BangHead:

Here is Diggergirl's display. She never makes it out as much, since she boycotts hunting in the heat and mud. Highlights in her case were the Sewanee button, Mexican War spur rowel, and Civil War-era "pocket saint" made out of pewter:

I went to the beach and dug five gold rings during my visit in the summer of 2017. Also dug several junk rings (to the left in the photo), a sterling silver cross, two other silver rings, and a class ring (returned to the owner).

From one of our sites, lots of buttons, Henry Clay campaign button, watch winders, the GW button, Early Seateds, and Spanish Silver!

Tavern.JPG Tavern1.JPG Tavern2.JPG

Shangalang's relic finds, including plantation tokens, the French Marine Artillery button, early Navy button, the amazing Eagle Voltigeurs button, complete colonial era spur, canteen spout, and lots and lots of fine silver coins--Spanish, Capped, and Seated!

Let me magnify those KILLER silvers Shangalang dug and spread 'em out for ya:

Another great site netted me six early silvers and my FIRST antebellum GOLD! Probably dating to the 1840s era!

You guys (and gal) really show the rest of us how it is supposed to be done.

GW button, Eagle V button, Spanish, Capped and seated coins... it's just too sweet, it makes my teeth hurt!

Congrats on an exceptional set of finds, and best of luck in 2018.

 Awesome Finds!

Wish I could go down there and hunt with you, and not stuck up here with a foot of snow on the ground.

that was my least favorite part about living up north! In some ways we’re blessed with lots of material culture down here to dig, fields that still get plowed, and sites that were lived in by affluent families. On the other hand the heat, mud, and tropical rain/humidity few would understand if they hadn’t dug down here. I’m planning to be more careful about the heat this year.
