In the morning we stopped off & had a chat with one of the guys who works on the farm. He started up detecting when we first got permission & we somewhat coached him at the beginning. He had a sceat off this site in the first year he started! However, he has spent most his time digging crashed WWII planes. Before we left he called out 'go find yourself a Sceat', so I did.:thumbsup:
Over the years we have pasted this site & the small 3-4 inch turn didn't help us much although it is our flattest choice right now, so off we gridded.
I did 5 hours & Cru'Dad 3.5 hours;

Roman Pottery & animal teeth
1 Saxon Pot Shard
11 Roman Coins (1 holed in the Saxon period)
Circa 700 AD Silver Saxon Sceat. We can only really hope to get 1 a year, so the pressures off this year.:headbang:

UPDATE from expert;

''This is a good example of Series E (variety G2), which is from the Primary Phase of the sceat coinage (690s-c. 720), with 23 other finds on EMC.
This is a coinage from the Netherlands - possibly Domburg, but that is far from certain. Ruler unknown.''

Yeap, although a fairly common type (Don't get confused with common find), its a high grade silver in crisp condition. So yes, very happy with it.

Yeap a S790C. Although often described as porcupines etc...They are thought to be a degenerated head based on a Roman style.
This is now my 3rd of this type, the most of any type I've had.

Beautiful Sceat! Congrats! Saxon silver came early this year. I see the double pierced coin. I don't remember seeing one pierced like this in any of your posts. :icon_thumleft:

I was discussing it with Cru'dad earlier, there seems no reason to do this for a pendant, so I think it must be for a bracelet.
We have had a few, but they are 10 times rarer than the single hole.

Nice sceat Cru, wish we had more of those up north.:thumbsup:
I'm guessing your best chance is the Northumberland types?

I think it took me nearly 20 years to get my first. Now we have a few sites where we have had multiples. This site included.

Well done Cru. Great coin. I love the Sceat. I know that you've been hunting for at least 10 years and if it is the only the third of its kind than it is definitely a banner find. I hope you find others. BANNER

I've been hunting for nearly 30 years, Cru'dad about 10 years or so less.

I have had some extremely rare types of Sceat that may have deserved banner in the pass but this type although a rare find would not be worth more than ยฃ100, so not really banner worthy IMO.
