Wrap up of today's 5 hour hunt today in New Jersey.

1822 Coronet Large Cent, undatable Braided Hair Large Cent (1840-1857), 5 buttons and what seems to be a 1621-1665 Spanish Colonial Philip IV Silver Cob.

Any Spanish Cob experts on the forum? Any info on the cob would be greatly appreciated!

** update - a few people sent me links and photos and it looks like the cob I dug yesterday is a Philip IV 1621-1665 Spanish 1 Real Cob (based on the weight which is 3-4 grams). It's believed the cuts are from the original creation of the cob and not from a cut occurring later.

To determine the denomination of your cob, use 27.460 grams as the 'standard weight' for an 8 reales coin; and proportionately less for lower denominations (4,2,1 and 1/2 ).
Don.........

Thanks for that info Don!

Question based on that:

8 Reales = 27.460
4 Reales = 13.73
2 Reales = 6.865
1 Reales = 3.43

So, my 3 gram cob would be either a 1 real, a 2 reales cut in half or a 4 reales cut in quarters. I'm thinking a cut 2 reales. I wish I could tell how many cuts it had. Any thought on that based on the photos?

Man those cobs are so crazy, they've got to be hard to find with how small they are. Nice job!
