Hi everyone,

Am doing the happy dance today ;D First gold, first ZAR coinage, Best find.

Went to a old Boer war site with a friend, where the artillery were set up for battle in the Boer war.
It is a great site made up of walls about 1.5 metres high that the troops used to run around in. The whole structure is in a horseshoe shape.
Anyway, I got a signal and dug down and found this coin. As soon as I picked it up, I saw that it was gold because of the colour. Something I learnt from this site is to never rub a coin, so I waited till I got home and washed it in soapy water. (that was very difficult)

Gold Kruger 1 Pond, 0.2353 Ounces Gold, Value +- R2000

I found another bullet case and a small piece of pottery, and that was it......

I know for a fact that this site has been gone over by many others in the past, as this was told to me by another guy that did detecting. So right from the start I knew that if I found something, there would not be much.
But I have learnt from Tnet that a site is never stripped of it's finds.

Anyway, here are pics of the coin and the site, hope you enjoy them.

God bless
Peter

Hi Guys and Gals,

As you can see I have reached the banner status ;D wow there are a lot of records that have been acheived with this coin for me ;D

Thanks so much for all the great words, there is nothing in this world that can lift a person up than to have great friends.

Cornelius, not sure what you mean here, but the coin is definately gold... it reads it on another detector as gold, is as clean as gold is when it comes out the ground, and the weight of the coin is exact as stated in the coin catalogue.... cannot get better than that, and if that is not enough, well my knowledge of gold from working in gold mines is enough for me. ;D

A member of the "gold coin club" I like that ;D what a status to have.

Ashleen, I must admit, not rubbing the coin was hard to do, but I have learnt so much from the good people here to know better..... In fact it is the people here that stopped me from scratching the coin. Thanks guys and gals.

Also thanks for all the lessons that you have all given me, that is a treasure on its own....

God bless
Peter

Thanx everyone. Does anybody know what a SA Pond (Pound) would buy in those days? or what was the soldiers salary in them days? I think this soldier lost a lot of money :'(

God bless

Texan, the value in US dollars is around $350 with the exchange rate..... ::) But I have seen one on offer for around $600...

Roger, thanks and yes,,,, My operation was finally a success (after 5 operations and 8 years) I am feeling great, but still very weak. In fact today my legs feel like falling off, and my back ???

It is so nice to reach the banner, I feel like I have finally made a difference in the metal detecting world ;D

Thanks to you Roger, you have been a great help to me, and an inspiration.

God bless
Peter
