🥇 BANNER Revolutionary War USA Relic? No Idea, but I Know It's Old!

Deep in the woods today near the spot where I found a Rev War era stirrup. Got a low 70's signal 6 inches down and thought I had dug a flat button. Wiped it off and noticed that one side had grooves on it instead of a shank. Then I turned it over and saw a USA logo on it! Looks similar to the Rev War button logo, but not quite the same. It's 1" in diameter and appears to be brass.

Did some research online, but I drew a blank. No idea what this is or how old. Hoping it's Rev War, but it could be later than that. What the heck did I find?

My thoughts exactly. The coin that sold for $565.00 on eBay has NO evidence of the "A' going over the "S".

Wow this thread went sideways in a hurry. IMO the Bar Cent sold on eBay is a fake. The reverse is conveniently damaged at both possible locations for the thorn. Not the first one I have seen. Bottom line is your bar cent is very likely genuine but no one will ever know for certain because it is too far gone. You are not going to sell it, i wouldn't either! personally I would be dancing a jig over finding this relic. You have a spectacular find!

Not sure about the one on eBay, but this one is real. The issue with this coin is the "A" segment that is over the "S" wears off and gives the appearance of being a fake. So that criteria used to authenticate the coin means jack squat, in my opinion.

I agree. Its a real bummer that the thorn is corroded away. That is the only real determiner It's yours and its real. Thats all that matters

Gee, I almost wish I hadn't found this coin now. I'm not going to mail it any where or take it to some coin "expert'. Every time I touch it, more of it flakes off. Nothing will stop that. That's the way it is with old coppers that have been in wet soil for 200 years. I've got at least 5 no date coppers that flaked away as soon as they started to dry after coming out of the ground. I've learned from those mistakes. If they're flaking, leave them alone, put them in a cardboard flip and live with it.

The best way for me to resolve this pointless debate is to dig another1700's coin from the spot, just as long as it isn't another bar cent! LOL!

I totally agree with Cru, he is just trying to help you and you are mistaking his kindness as criticism. If I found it I'd put elmers glue on it and stabilize it. Then I would find a real expert in dug coppers that can tell you what it really is. Of course it's not my coin and we all know what you will do with it, so it's kindof pointless to want to know what it really is. GL in finding more stuff and congrats again on a exciting and tremendously cool find.

Sorry so late getting to this thread. Banner for sure. As soon as I saw the post, I recognized it as a coin. I have spent countless hours thumbing through the Post Colonial Issues section of the Red Book over the years. Amazing find. Something most of us will only ever see in pictures. This is centerfold coin porn.

Bathe the coin in Mineral Oil or Extra Virgin Olive Oil to stabilize the copper from further degradation, rinse lightly with water, pat dry in the folds of a soft towel, then place it in a 2x2 protective holder.

Congratulations on the find. I grew up in Western Cranston, left in '82 for the Army then settled in NC. There is a lot of colonial history there. Wish I had a detector back them. Best of luck

Thanks, guys! This spot keeps giving up the good stuff. Found an iron relic there a few weeks back and had no idea what is was. Posted it here the other day and it ended up being a flintlock musket mechanism from the early 1800's! In case anyone missed that thread, here's a couple of pics (before and after electrolysis).

Posted it here the other day and it ended up being a flintlock musket mechanism from the early 1800's! In case anyone missed that thread, here's a couple of pics (before and after electrolysis).

Tim: Nicely done! I've only dug one lock plate in 30+ years, and it was a Civil War percussion type, but did recover a nice frame to a mid-19th century boot pistol frame a few years back. You've come up with another nice find. There more of the white stuff coming later today, but I'll just double up on my research to be ready when the weather turns.
