Indian Steve and I went to a local park this morning, our first time there. Really didn't find much - I dug 6 zincolns, a nickel and a dime for 21 cents.

So, then we headed down the back roads and found a mid 1800's house. We stopped there, Steve knocked on the door, and we were granted permission to dig there.

About 2 hours there, and I found my first ever silver thimble - a HUGE bucket list item for me. It's bent up but I think I'll leave it as is:

I haven't found any markings on it, but tested with both the 18k and the Silver acid test - positive both tests.

I also dug a 1943-P war nickel....

A very old padlock - need to do electrolysis:

A clump of rust pocket knife - not pictured.

And of course another 18 cents in clad.

A memorable day today.

Have you looked up inside that thimble yet? Mine had a maker's Mark stamped inside the top.
Nice!

Thank you, I was wondering where a mark would be on it. I've been very afraid of trying to "open it up" - worried about it breaking. Is silver really flexible enough to open it up?

I scrubbed the thimble with a toothbrush, and inside with a cue tip, and dish soap. I tried spreading it apart gently with an ink pen and it was damaging it. Pretty thin material. I took a 30x magnifier and thought / imagined maybe that I saw the letters T E R. I damaged it a little spreading it and stopped there. I won't go any further, it is as it shall forever be right now. It's a tiny thing, my pinky won't go in it and I don't have huge hands. I figure it was a gift to a child for Xmas or birthday. It did pass two scratch tests for silver in different acids. So, I settle for it as is.

It weighs 0.65g

Oh my no! NEVER take any chance on damage! Just rinse and look. Even if you found "REVERE" as the hallmark, wouldn't be worth destroying to see!

Its good nuff! Just put it in a protective case and enjoy!

Here's pics after I scrubbed it a bit, a whole lot of stains came off, but some of them are pretty tough and I didn't want to damage it further than I had already. I used straight dish soap and a toothbrush. In the view looking down inside you'll see the damage on the bottom of the pic a little left of middle.

That thing is really fragile - I'm done with it.
