Went and tried out a shifter I made and I didn't spend one cent making it, Made out
of a bread crate, two by fours and little square fencing.. So about an hour in one of
my spots. Found my first ever piece of a clay pipe, and a bunch of little chipped up
brick. That sifting sure will wear you out. First time experience. lol

Yeah, I went and try it out on a 1700s homesite where lots of nails and iron. By shifting it, I found out the old home must of burnt down, there were lots of ash.

That's the first bread crate shifter I've seen. Cool design.

Up above the 49th parallel we call them sifters. :)

Nails and iron is part of it, But if they are square nails that's a keeper. You never know what you will come across by sifting.

I would like to do that more. I tried it a few times and you are right, it is a lot of work. If I could fit a little motor on one to do the shaking, that would make it perfect.lol

O.K. I have never tried that type of treasure hunting, and it appears to be a tedious project.

Once one gets into a pit or heavy iron the sitting is the only option sometimes. The rewards out weigh everything, the definition of tedious could be digging pull tabs looking for a piece of bling.Just saying
