So we moved to HHI. I have in 1.5 years only gone out twice:
dime mini ball.jpg
1. Poked around a new house development on high ground where the Union Army camped out and found the mini-ball. I found a golf ball too actually, on the surface.
2. Yesterday on a church side yard I found the 1948 dime, and a couple of wheat cents. Not sure what the token is, S.C. and some un-clear lettering, 25c on back...

I have found at least 100 trade tokens over the years, and have encountered the same crud on aluminum examples. There is really only one way to clean the aluminum examples, and that is by scrubbing it with a brass bristled brush. The brass bristled brush will quickly remove the corrosion and make any remaining lettering legible. You will have some pitting from where the crud was removed, but you will have stopped the corrosion process and you will have an identifiable specimen.

Finding aluminum trade tokens is always bitter sweet because of this, but there could be an excellent local example hiding in that corrosion.

I know that cleaning/restoration is a touchy subject. Trade tokens typically have lots of tiny letters, and I think the most important part of restoring a trade token is making it legible and stopping any more corrosion.
