With the break in weather I decided it was time to dig a hole in a mates garden. Its been on my list of test pits for about a year.
It was an old late medieval house & next door had a shared well, it also used to be a toll house at one point. However, its the Roman layers I'm interested in, as it's within the old Roman Walled Town.
Most holes I dig have Victorian mixed up with Roman in the top layers but this one only had Victorian. The next layer 50cm-100cm were Medieval & then I hit the water table, so game over. No idea if the Roman layers were deeper, but I suspect it was too boggy back then.

I then detected for 15 minutes on the grass & got;
1 Button (Found the other with eyes only in the hole)
£2.04p
1961 Halfcrown
1736 Farthing (Gave to the owners as the best find)
Victorian Suspender Buckle (Found in hole)

Medieval Pot Shards, Animal Bones & Teeth were found at 50-100cm.

Final picture, my filled in hole.

Total time spent 1 hour 45 mins.
