V nickel!

Hey everyone,

Did curbstrips in my neighborhood today and got a nice surprise with this V nickel. My oldest U.S. coin yet topping my 1897 barber quarter in January. Found an 1800s IHP last week but I couldn't confirm the exact date. I think I found a V last year but it was in real tough shape so I couldn't be sure. This is my first confirmed!

The little Netherlands coin had me thinking I'd landed a silver for a bit. It's made of nickel 🙄.

The tally:
-1 V Nickel (1892)
-7 Wheats (all 40s/50s)
-1948 Netherlands 10c
-Interesting medallion

Thanks for looking and happy hunting!
-W

Congrats! 19th century coins are so few and far between our area that they are definitely an extra special find.

Nice V-nick score!!! I've only found 3-4 of them and they've always been 1900s. Wish I could find one like yours from the 18s [emoji106]🏻

Thank you. I found a couple old Asian coins last year but hadn't found my first 1800s US coin until this year. They are definitely tricky to find around here.

Good question. Depends on your city. Legally I don't need permission but I always get it anyways. Generally for two reasons:
-I don't want to give our hobby a bad name.
-I don't like having to look over my shoulder while hunting. I want it to be a relaxed experience.

Most people are really cool about it. Probably 90% of people I talk to are fine with it.

Thanks! I think it was a totally random find. Nothing in the immediate area was older than the 30s which makes me think this thing may have been in circulation for decades. It's pretty worn so it easily could've been a 1930s drop. What a crazy hobby!

Very nice! The medallion looks almost like a good service medal. Maybe one the experts can give an ID. :icon_thumleft:
