Ohio--that token may be from Dayton - I can't tell for sure what the numbered street is (5th or 6th) and what the first two letters of the name is (Me?), but if it is Mercer's Cafe and 6th & Walnut, I found a match in Dayton. Among other references is this from the Cincinnati Enquirer of 4 Oct 1960.

Those are a couple of nice finds. I like that token, and always like the Barber Quarters.

Quite a haul for a small space, too bad there wasn't more real estate.

OWG - do you agree with the wording being Mercers and the street being 6th? The first reference I have found is that of a holdup in the cafe in Feb 1955. However, upon more closely looking at the records, this was in Dayton, KY, not Dayton, OH. That makes a bit more sense given where you found it. Being from the neighborhood, you probably had that figured out, but I sure didn't! The newspaper article I posted above just said Dayton, as do most of the others before and after, but a couple specified Dayton, KY. If you go to Google StreetView, there are a couple of buildings at that intersection that look like they could have been this business.

The cafe is not in the 1952 City Directory, but it is in the 1954 edition, so I'd guess it started business around 1953 and the tokens may have been ordered then.

Would it be okay to post your pics on tokencatalog.com?

John
