Hooray! I finally broke my silver half dollar jinx today! Found a 1914-S Barber silver half dollar, 9-10 inches deep with my Garrett Ace 250. I've been metal detecting for 49 years and a silver half dollar has always eluded me until this one popped out of the mud today. I have found a few clad halves over the years and always figured that my first silver half would be a Kennedy, a Franklin, or maybe a Walking Liberty but I really didn't think it would be a beautiful Barber. Please excuse my poor photography but I was a wee bit excited to say the least. ha.

That was a deep one, did it ring up as a quarter or half? Congrats!

Thanks, everyone, for the nice comments. pa-dirt_nc-sand, it mostly rang as a half but it did bounce around to a dime and quarter some. We'd been digging a bunch of iron and brass horse hitch rings and buckles so that's what I initially thought it probably was as they rang up about the same. I was sure happy to see the completely mud-covered round piece come out though. As soon as I picked it up, I knew I had a silver half. I washed most of the mud away and then put it back where it was for the photos. There were so many angry and wet fire ants in the hole that I no sooner placed it back before 5 or 6 ants started crawling across its face.

That's a long time to wait for finding your first silver half. Congratulations and hoping your next one comes much sooner. :icon_thumright:

Might as well edit your post and give us a photo of it close up.. both sides! What a find. I've never found any kind of a half dollar; it's just such a big coin that fewer are lost. Another thing I like is you found it with a relatively inexpensive machine... and deep! Good on ya!! Thanks for the post.
