I never expected what happened today! In 33 years of metal detecting I dug up my 4th Barber Half Dollar today! Hunting the front of a high school in a large slopped grass area only 5 inches
deep I dug out a 1910-S barber half! I think my eyes were as big a saucers when I saw the eagle on the back!

The icing on the cake were the two silver dimes I also dug. One was a merc missing
1/3 due to a lawnmower hit, the other was a 1947 rosie. 7 wheat pennies and a total of 95 coins made for an awesome day!

Congrats on the Barber half! I've only found barber dimes and a handful of Walking liberty halves.

That Barber is a super find! What's the past history of the site where you found it? It looks like the area has become modern.

tabman

Slope area was infested with gophers. I saw over a dozen of broken china dish pieces all over the place near the gopher mounds. My theory is that probably around 60 or 70 yeas ago when this school was being constructed dirt fill was brought in. Dirt might have come from another construction site and brought in the make the slopes. It's might be a continuing interesting area to hunt. I've only covered about 20% of the area.

Your average is much better than mine. In 49 years of detecting, I've only found one Barber half and that was earlier this month when using the least expensive detector I own, a Garrett Ace 250. Mine, a 1914-S, was 9" deep in muddy ground in the middle of a fire ant bed. Excuse the poor photo. My old camera has been messing up lately. Congratulations!

I was thinking the same thing by the looks of the property... that dirt was trucked in. Nice detective work there! Since everyone else has already congratulated you on the barber half...I'd like to be the first to congratulate you on having the school named after you 8-)
