I have been searching the dense Michigan woods for a number of years and rarely come across a piece of trade silver in such amazing condition. After a 2+ hour (uneventful) search this evening I finally hit something on the side of a washed out creek bank...possibly washed out during the spring thaw. The fur trade gods shine down upon thee!! MK4125 There may be a mother lode or you might just find a few pieces on a somewhat regular basis .Either way you win every time you find something .Knowing you are in a great spot is a huge advantage .You mentioned about finding a number of copper pieces in the middle .That may have been a place where they had a campfire and at some time or another nearly everyone was in that same small area .

Congratz on banner. The "contact" period of time was relatively short. Especially that period of time when odd-ball trinkets were worthy enough to be traded for vast amounts of labor, furs, etc..... Within a short time, the "novelty" wore off. And the trinkets lost their trading power. So to find any of them, is a great item of Americana history.

That is so true! "What's that you say? Twelve unicorn pelts for one small bird bell? Done!", Says the Native American.

When the first European explorers arrived in what's now Oregon and Washington area (mid 1700s ?), there's accounts of a single spoon , or a single axe-head, being traded for cart loads of otter fur pelts. Furs that had taken the Indians un-told amounts of time and labor to have hunted, tanned, etc...

Shheeessk, now if only I could get my employees to work all week for a single axe head or spoon !

I havenโ€™t been around Tnet lately, but see a killer find right before my eyes! Iโ€™m so happy you dug a big enough plug and avoided any major trauma. Congrats on making banner!

That find is a winner for sure...fur trade silver and to find an intact piece of that size is a home run well done.

A belated congratulations on the banner also which was a no brainer btw.

No Maker's Mark that I can find. There is a small mark where some idiot nicked it with the shovel when he was extracting from the ground...but I don't think that counts. :)

I saw a similar one to this one time. Old timer found it in Mottville, Michigan. Made a treasure hunting magazine back in the 80's or 90's. If I remember correctly it was made in Montreal. Looked very similar to yours. Fantastic find.
