I started hunting the new permission yesterday and about an hour into it i found huge silver. It was a 1900 Lafayette silver dollar. I had never seen on or even heard of them before. It was under a bunch of gravel where the original buggy path use to be so it's not in great condition but luckily i could still read both sides including the date. I looked it up and evidently only 50k were minted and it was the first commemorative coin ever produced. Needless to say i was Very excited when i dug it up. I also found an old button a lantern part, some type of lead or pewter gun along with several other things including a pile of lead. I only had a couple hours to hunt after work so I cant wait to get back over there. The property owner said i could come any time i wanted.

I would think that that has to be an exceedingly rare thing to find with a detector. Congrats!

Simply a great hunt.Quite a few years ago I found that commemorative 1900 Lafayette dollar and it was inside a silver bezel and the coin was protected by it and came out in BU shape.Congrats on finding a rare coin.

One thing about the T2 is it screams at silver! I know the sound as soon as I hear it now. I also found out that the one 2 piece brass item shown is a old car or truck horn reed. Probably a model T. And the lipstick tube was from 1934.

Great saves, Ben...congrats on your big silver, I've never seen or even heard of it, did you check the history or origin of it besides the number minted? Being the first silver commemorative coin makes it a very exciting find. You have a GREAT site there! Thx for sharing, Ddf.

Yes, It was minted for the United States participation in the 1900 worlds fair in Paris. It depicts George Washington with Marquis Lafayette. Originally they were going to Mint 100k but at the last minute changed it to 50k which makes them pretty rare. Even in this ones condition it is probably worth a couple hundred dollars. Approx $20 in silver. It's a thick heavy coin. Not that i would ever sell it or anything else I've ever found anyway. lol

You think it's fire damage? I assumed it was from being in gravel over 100 years.

You think it's fire damaged? I originally thought it was from being in gravel for over 100 years. I did find other melted things though.

Dang, very cool find! I've never seen one either. Definitely looks like fire damage to me. I've never found a coin in the gravel that looks like that.

Yes, the grainy texture and the slight bubbling are very good indicators that it's been through a fire
