Hi all. My brother in law was doing work in his father's yard and stumbled upon this bayonet while digging on the property line. Needless to say, when he was sending me the texts, I was cursing a lot yet also speechless. I must admit, I don't have a lot of knowledge in weapons and was wondering if any of you could help me with some information that I could pass along to him. About all I can tell you is that it was found in central Maine.

He didn't even need a metal detector to find this! I am going up next week for a long weekend. We have a 14 acre wooded lot we were going to start hunting but once he found this, our plans have changed and we are going to search the heck out of his dad's property.

I can pass along any questions that would make an identification easier. I work 3pm until the early morning so I don't know when I can get back to check in. Thank you all in advance for any help and happy hunting.

I am back after a long shift. I texted him at lunch and he sent me a bunch more pictures. One thing I am not noticing is any markings. He works days and I passed on all the relevant texts and pictures on where he should be looking for markings and he is going to get back to me again.

I would like to address the veracity of my post. This is not my find. I am just as excited by it as you should be. I have no reason to believe what he is sending me is anything but 100 percent on the up and up as he is a good and honest man.

More pictures!

I can pass along any requests for better photos or angles and I do appreciate all the feedback. Like I said, I am not seeing any markings from the photos.

IMHO, it is just an optical illusion that makes the bayonet appear to be different than the one pictured in pics #1 thru #3 and #5. This is due to lighting, the background, the angle that the bayonet is being held and due to the position from where the pic was taken. If the O.P.'s brother-in-law was to provide an almost identical pic of the bayonet but with a tape measure laying along side of the bayonet, it would dispel the questioning.

Pretty Good Optical Illusion :icon_thumright:

But I agree

If the First Pic was taken From the top or Bottom of this

It Could/would look straight

I for sure am not here to cause trouble. I see just two many problems and that might get me in trouble. Your last set of pictures ALSO show two different weapons.

Look at the locking slot. One is short and locks one way. One is long and locks the opposite way. That is impossible. You can't have it both ways.

We do have TWO different weapons here. I am NOT accusing someone of not finding anything. I am just stating the facts as I see them. I will bow out. I try to accept everything folks post. I enjoy history and learning. I just see two different bayonets.

I don't think you're here to cause trouble at all, Scuba. Just searching for answers on what was found. Those are four pictures in a row he sent me.

I did suggest he lightly rub where the markings may be.

West Gardiner, Maine

He told me that the house is from 1842 and doesn't know what, if anything, was there before it. Like I mentioned, I haven't been to the property yet and won't get there until next weekend.

AND PLEASE... pretty please.... take a camera and LOTS of pics :) to post here of course :)

You don't just find a bayonet laying around without there being the BIG possibility of there being more.

IF I were you I would be anxious as hell to get on that property.

You know... I have to say... finding one of these is so cool... it always stirs the imagination.

IMO these are always a banner find... as good as a belt plate or anything of the likes... I have a feeling this may be something other than above mentioned ones.

And yes... I will pursue this one till myself or someone pos I.D's it.

Too cool... I envy your trip :)

I don't expect to find a bayonet, per se, but c'mon... There has to be something there that I FIND that I can post about. I just want my dang seated ANYTHING.

I'm headed to bed. I apologize Scuba, if I seemed offended. I am not. I appreciate your input and knowledge. I do think some of the camera angles may be causing confusion. I will have him send more pictures to see if we can clear this up and post them when I wake up.

Cheers AARC

I totally agree. I think the only thing that beats a bayonet is a sword. I can see where it could be an optical illusion. I even studied the last pictures and can see where the locking part is Z shaped and could be the same end.

Thanks for all the pictures. I have to get the cop out of me!! I try not to be suspect but sometimes that is hard.

Thanks all for understanding me.

That's a great link, Terry. Thank you! I haven't heard back from him yet but I will pass this along as well. I'm sure he has calipers for accurate socket measurements. I am excited to see if he can get a pencil rubbing to see if there are any markings. I will update you all when I get updates. Thank you ALL for all your guidance. I am certainly getting an education as well. I
