went to an auction last weekend of an old retired 90 plus year old gunsmith....I bought a 20mm ammo can full of various types of ammo,,these were in it...For $20.00 I think I did well...
They look like some really old and collectible cartridges. I know I have seen some of them in my civil war book, but I would appreciate it if you would please identify them to educate the rest of us.
What on EARTH is the second one in from the left?!? What a crazy looking round! French pin fire of some sort?!? I know quite a bit about ammunition and cartridges; and I have no idea what that is!! I’d pay $20 for that alone!!! If you learn more about it, post a follow up! Inquiring minds want to know!
I think the one you are referring to is a Burnside cartridge, developed during the Civil War. .54 caliber I think. I've found the bullets but never the case of one. Great buy!!!...d2
Here is the Cartridge I.D's left to right....45-70 benet primed,54 cal Burnside,52 cal Maynard,56-52 Spencer Rimfire..3 56-56 Spencer Rimfires.. the last a .44 Henry Rimfire
