found a round concretion last month and broke away crust to discover a round ball
wondered if could be a small canon ball - well took to Whydah pirate museum and had archeologist look at it
and she confirmed I had a large "shot" ball or small canon ball from a swivel gun
hello2.gif

it is little larger than lg shot balls they've found and she seemed to lean more toward from a deck gun

Thatโ€™s a cool piece. I bet that made a mess when it hit something.

Very cool. That Whydah display is incredible! They were set up in Portland for a few months. It was beyond my expectations. Congrats on a great relic

That's awesome. Nice to get some informed confirmation from an expert. I had a chance to visit that museum a couple of weeks ago. Very fun, and educational.

I'm not an expert but I have been metal detecting the City Park for 30 years, and I feel confident in saying that sized ball was most likely used to kill lobsters.

the one thing she could not do is date it - I find musketballs in the area and flatbuttons now and then which the buttons
range from 1700s into the 1800s - I found a Continental USA Washington army pewter button in the area in the water
though no fighting took place that I know of - it was probably a practice shot - same with the musket balls
I know that supposedly there was a small sloop that ran aground there in the later 1700s that they supposedly used for target practice for yrs
I find bronze nails/spikes and lead balls around one area but it is a couple miles from where iron ball came from
