Holy smokes! A cob!!!

I went to my old haunt; the Colonial Beach, for a little bit this morning with a friend. This place has been hit by other people, so targets are not as plentiful as they used to be. This was actually the first target I dug, and when I saw it, I thought it was a numbered pewter regiment button. Boy was I wrong! (Not that I wouldn't do the happy dance for a nice rev war button). I know it's a cob, but I have no idea what the original coin was. By the size of the letter, I'd say 8 reales. I figure if anyone knows, you guys will! I'm stoked!!!!

From it's design (the initial of the monarch), I'd guess it's a 1/2 real minted during the reigns of the Carlos' or Felipes' in Mexico City. The denomination is based on 27.468 grams for an 8R coin and proportionately less for lower denominations.

Thanks Don! It is definitely cut to the size of a half reale. I'll take a look at the 8 reales milled during that time and try to match up

agreed, much too small for an 8, 1/2 seems about right.

PS. Congrats its still the last of the Spanish Silver I need. Got the earlier & later, now I need this middle period!

Oh I had no idea they were made like that. They aren't found in my neck of the woods very often. I've never seen one posted from my province. I have a handful of 8 reales, and this cob seems much thinner, so that makes perfect sense. Do you know an appropriate date range?

Another clue: The lettering is unique to the 1/2 real.

I'm no expert on these as I too am still looking, I know enough to be dangerous, so I will leave it to others. (but my guess is late 17th C)

Nice find. My guess would be an early 1700s(Philip V) 1/2 real cob with the V that is clearly visible on it. The late 1600s(Charles II) 1/2 real cob monogram that I have looks quite different

Perfect. Thank you very much! There is a wide range in dates st this site. I found a spectacle buckle in there too. The cool part is that this town wasn't settled until the loyalists arrived in 1786. There was mention that the french may have been in this particular spot earlier than that, but there is nothing concrete that I've ever read. There were some Rev War era settlers further along the coast (about 15 miles) but that's it. Maybe their theory is right!
