Horrible as it sounds I've seen collections of items looted from the pockets of the dead on WW1 battlefields. The item is contemporary to this period as well as being in the focus of such activity. The war being started as a result of atrocities committed by the Germans and Austrians in Serbia, an Austrian coin might be really tempting to a Doughboy.

THANKS..this coin does have some cool history about it.
i didn't think about the struggles and hard times that the people endured during that period of time..

My grandfather was a cook, he'd made a shadow box from some old cabinet he had. Abt 36" square. As a kid I'd always go into his collection room and stare at the weird looking stuff in the display. I remember porcelainized silver cigarette and snuff boxes with the officer's portrait on the front and the names of the junior officers. Tiny corkscrews, porcelain family portraits and pictures of wives and girlfriends. Tiny testaments written in German. Gold and silver teeth. Pocketknives unusual to American design. Metal toothpicks and ear spoons. Bullet art. Family daguerreotypes,
syringes and other personal medical stuff. Money and spiritual medallions. Prayers written on fabric and fragile paper. And a whole lot more. I asked him several times where the stuff came from but he always covered it up and shoed me off to my father. Pretty grim stuff!
