I got back for 6hrs yesterday to an old permission at a c1860 home site that I first detected in 2014. I’ve been back several times since, but without much success. The difference yesterday was that we're coming off almost three straight days of rain here in Ontario.

My first interesting find was a lead heart attached to an old piece of metal. I’ve found these early ‘lead hearts’ before in the form of horse rosettes (see last picture), but none like this before. If anyone can shed any light on how this might have been used I would appreciate it. The ‘star button’ is a two-piece button with the back rusted out, I’ve never seen this style before. When I first saw a 92 — 93 reading on the Deus VDI, I looked down to see what I thought was an aluminum slug sticking out of the dirt… boy was I wrong! It’s obviously a Canadian George VI quarter (c1909—1936) unfortunately it’s worn as smooth as a baby’s bottom!

A few of the more interesting finds from today was a brass shield buckle, a plain Victorian sash buckle, a small brass padlock and a 1951 dog tag.

Thanks very much for looking!
Dave

PS. This past week took a walk in the woods to check on the two McLaughlin hunting cabin sites, as I would like to detect the field periphery… nope, still under corn. :laughing7: (Last three pics)

Thank you Whyme.
I'll tumble the lock this winter to remove the corrosion on the iron clasp.

Thank you Anton.
I'm going to post this piece in the What is It Forum, to hopefully find out more about what it was. :icon_scratch:

Thanks for your post thrifty.
This is my first silver quarter of the year, as they just don't turn up in the fields or the woods where I usually detect.
Dave

Thank you Cru.
It was fun to detect a site I detected years ago with the AT Pro, but the Deus seemed to make the difference.

Thanks very much Tommy. :occasion14:
It's a shame to think this c1860 house will be demolished shortly to make way for residential development.

Cool button! 🙌 Looks like someone took a wire brush or sandpaper to that quarter before it was dropped.

Thanks very much for noticing my cleaning technique invent4hir.
As you know, the secret is to not over clean the relic, but just to stabilize it and make it presentable for display.

Best of luck to you,
Dave

I sure wish the button had a brass back, I'd love to have researched it's maker and date. :icon_scratch:
Our silver coins here in Canada were 92.5% Silver & .075 Copper from 1870-1919 , so they were relatively soft and wore out quickly.
From 1920 - 1952 our silver coins were 80% silver and 20% Copper, which made them much more durable from handling.
