It does not look like steel, and I have never seen one that wasn't steel on a real gun. It also does not look like the vise actually works and it doesn't look like flint in the vice. I'm thinkin' toy part.

I agree Gunsil, I’ve been a collector for a Long time and I’ve never seen a brass flintlock hammer before (just wouldn’t hold up). And yes, the shape of the top jaw doesn’t look right. Not trying to downgrade your find, it’s still a neat piece, but I don’t believe it’s from a period flintlock weapon.

It is from a toy or non-firing replica. The hammer would have to be made of steel or iron, and the top jaw, flint, and screw are all cast in one piece on yours.

Gotta agree with Gunsil and Fullstock that it is a toy. The "flint" in the jaws looks molded in. You can see in the pic of the real one, how the flint is wrapped in leather. A heart pounding find for sure, and one that makes this hobby so fascinating..........................Daniel
