The weather finally broke here is Savannah, and I was able to get another quick hunt in today with the XP Deus 9" x35 coil. Dug this Rev War Era British Navy Officer's Button. It cleaned up very nicely.

Here is the final result:

This is what it looked like when I found it:

Maybe it's a 'Trade secret' lol

First used water and brushed with a toothbrush. Then soaked in peroxide for a couple of hours and brushed with toothbrush. I noticed the gold gilt so I soaked it in vinegar for couple of minutes and brushed it with a toothbrush. The rest of the dark crud came off and gold gilt shown through. Rinsed well in water then coated and gently rubbed with baking soda. Rinsed again well with water and let completely dry. The coated with petroleum jelly and let sit for a few hours. Wiped clean with a soft cotton towel.

Thanks for the reply.
Your technique worked very well IMHO.

Pretty sure ill put the petroleum jelly on my GA Button & a few of the nice general service buttons I have dug.

Thanks again & you did some very nice work.

I've got to say the contrast between the patina and the gold gilt is stunning. Great find and great preservation. :hello2:
