There's a movie called Field of Lost Shoes about those VMI cadets (sorry "keydets") and the battle of New Market. Great history with that group of young men. Congrats on that find. You don't see dug examples too often.

Congrats, you're onto a great early site there. What a terrific assortment of early finds. The sword pommel ID looks spot on in the first photo, but when seen in the context of the group photo it appears a bit large. I may be wrong but I wonder if it might be something else. The one sword pommel I found was smaller than a minie ball, and yours is several times larger.

Gregg, I hope you are right that its a pommel and hope you are able to identify it. Here are a few shots of the model 1767 Grenadiers hanger hilt I found a while back, as well as the pommel. You can see how much smaller this pommel is when compared to the one you found.
