Been hunting in the woods and made a few good finds recently.

What I believe to be turn of the century (Black Powder-Paper) Shotgun Shells.
From somewhere between 1894-1913 timeframe.

And a .50 Cal Musket Round Ball with a Heavy Patina and possible Patch marks.

Thanks..
The place is all wooded, with hardwoods, and i was amazed at how deep the Round Musket Ball was found.
Im guessing it was most likely a Smoothbore pistol round, being as it was such a comparatively small caliber ball, but who knows.
Anyone got any idea on that?

Some nice finds. Congrats. I’d stick around there for awhile and get the rest of what else could be hiding in the ground.

No sign yet of a former dwelling of any type on the site so far.
Topos as far back as I can find, show no buildings either...
Got nuthin but time to search the entire area..

Great finds and best wishes,

I have a large ammo box full of bullet molds. Very few of them are the same size except for the colt models. Back in the day when local gun makers were the rule and not the exception they contrived their own riffling machines and broaches. The barrels were often tailored to stop the game at hand in the area. Firearms technology then was not much different from technology today. The gunsmiths were aware of the balance between velocity and bullet drop. Hitting power vs penetration, re wound channel. It wasn't until the Vietnam era that studies were conducted that proved conclusively that small caliber projectiles were better in the bush than large heavy ones. They fired an M14 and a M16 at stationery targets through a panel of screen wire about mid range. They were astonished to find that the smaller round hit the target with better consistency every time. It all came down to minute of angle deviation. Both rounds had about the same deviation but because of the difference in velocity the smaller round had better accuracy because it traveled that distance more quickly, thereby limiting the effects of the deviation in angle. I knew a man who thought to "sting" a large bear. He used a 22-250 and painted the hives with gore. The fine was eeuuuggge! I know, TMI!

Best wishes and good luck!

Amazing how well the MAX finds even tiny/deep Lead, and Brass blows your ears off... :)

Nice relic finds. I would keep looking around, maybe those hunters dropped some coins or other items.
