very old unknown copper "2" coin

My buddy pulled this old copper out of a field in an area that's produced many colonial coppers, but it's pretty toasted. I initially thought it would be a king george farthing because of the size and appearance but one side appears to have a faint "2" prominent in the center so I thought someone might recognize it. The other side is even worse. I haven't been able to find a match, the "2" looks larger than it would be on a 2 cent and I don't think a 2 cent would be this deteriorated. If anyone can offer any suggestions or ID I'd love to know. Thanks

I don't think so, there's clearly an outer "layer" with the detail that's deteriorating but I've seen that on other old coppers in this condition. I don't think it was a more precious metal or anything like that.

Why does it have a silvery looking layer on top of the copper ? It looks way thicker than a plating ?

I think that's the light reflecting at a weird angle, it looks all black in real life. I'll try to post a clearer photo
